Argyll is well known for being a fishing paradise, with its well-stocked shores, lochs and rivers attracting many keen anglers, and there's no shortage of fishing opportunities around our parks.
Fishing Near Drimsynie Estate
Loch Goil (All Year)
Free fishing all year off the shore or from a boat. June to late October there are usually shoals of Mackerel in the loch. Cod and Pollack are in the loch all year. Popular fishing spots are off the shoreline at the village as well as the rocky shore by the pier at Carrick Castle.
River Goil (April-October)
The River Goil has both salmon and sea trout runs, Fly or worm, single hook. Maximum of four permits issued per day. Permits allow fishing on the three miles between Hell’s Glen Bridge and the river mouth, both banks. Permits available from the Post Office: 01301 703 201.
Lettermay Loch (March-October)
This is for hill walkers who fish. Access is via the forestry road at Lettermay, and then either the Cowal Way Path or a fire break, depending on which loch you are heading to. Both paths can be churned up and muddy. It is quite a trudge to reach these lochs - but the reward is complete isolation in a magnificent setting. Guests at Drimsynie have free fishing on both lochs. Fly fishing does well. Bait and spinning allowed.
Fishing Near Hunters Quay
Dunoon Reservoir (All Year)
This 5-acre reservoir is situated in woodland near Dunoon. It is stocked with Rainbow Trout of a good average size. Fly fishing only. Permits from Campbells Paint & Hardware: 01369 704191.
Loch Loskin (April-September)
This 6-acre lochan is located on the A885 Sandbank Road just outside of Dunoon. It is stocked with high quality Brown Trout. Fly fishing by boat and boat hire available. Permits from Campbells Paint & Hardware: 01369 704191.
Loch Tarsan (April-September)
Loch Tarsan is situated by the side of the B838 a short drive from Dunoon. It is stocked with Brown Trout. Bank fishing or boats available to hire. Permits from Campbells Paint & Hardware: 01369 704191.
Fishing Near Loch Lomond
River Leven (February-October)
Throughout the Summer and Autumn, the river provides excellent fishing. Night fishing for Sea Trout is popular from late June, with good catches recorded by anglers every year. The lower reaches of the Leven are tidal, and many anglers like to be on this stretch of the river from one hour after high tide during darkness, to cover fresh fish moving in and out with the tide. Loch Awe (March-October)
Loch Awe has always been famous for its wild brown trout. Whether novice or purist, young or old, Loch Awe has a great deal to offer both game and coarse fishermen. Permits from Loch Awe Boats, by Dalmally: 01866 833256.
Fishing Near Stratheck
Loch & River Eck (March-October)
Loch Eck is a 7-mile-long fresh water loch with plenty of fishing opportunities including sea trout and salmon, both on the river and in the loch itself. Permits can be purchased from Purdies in Dunoon: 01369 703232.
