Did you know..? Argyll Holiday Christmas Crackers

  • Enjoy festive facts all about Christmas in Scotland
  • Our Christmas jokes are sure to have you cracking up
  • Just what is the most popular Christmas song ever?

We have rounded up some of the best Christmas jokes and pieces of trivia for you to impress your family with this year.

Christmas Trivia #1 - What is Hogmanay?

Hogmanay is the Scots word for the last day of the year and also what our New Year celebrations are called.

Celebrations include gift-giving and visiting friends and family. Also, make sure you remember who the first person to enter your home in the new year is, as they will bring you luck for the rest of 2020! This tradition is called ‘First Footing’.

For many in Scotland, Hogmanay is more important than Christmas itself. It’s one of the reasons why so many people stay with us at Argyll Holidays over the full holiday period - to keep the festivities going.

Christmas Trivia #2 -  Is Christmas Illegal in Scotland?

For over 70 years, Christmas was officially banned in Scotland! From 1640 - 1712, anyone caught celebrating ‘Yule’ (as they used to call it) faced harsh punishments.

However, since then we have developed many traditions and these days Scotland is one of the most popular places to visit during the period for the beautiful scenery and snow.

Christmas Trivia #3 -  What is the Most Popular Christmas Song Ever?

It’s really hard to get a definite answer to “what’s the best Christmas song ever” because everyone’s tastes vary. However, we found these resources which give a good idea of some of the more popular songs:

Most popular Christmas song… by times it has been recorded

In 2014, Time magazine collected data all the way back to 1978 to see which was the most popular song by how many times it was recorded on different albums. Here's the full list, but what was number 1?

Result: Silent Night, Various Artists

Most popular Christmas song… by UK chart data

In 2017, the Independent devised a system based on download, purchase and streaming data to identify the most popular Christmas song. They were looking at UK data, from the years 2007-2016 and only taking results from the five weeks leading up to Christmas each year. You can see their full list here.

Result: All I Want for Christmas is You, Mariah Carey

Most popular Christmas song… by Argyll Holidays staff recommendations
