Don’t we all love holidays? There’s nothing better than escaping the hustle and bustle of city life for a while and enjoying life’s simple pleasures - especially when your destination is as beautiful as the stunning Scottish region, Argyll. Due to busy schedules and stressful jobs it can be difficult to switch off, but it’s incredibly important to simply take the time to relax with your loved ones. We understand just how important it is to keep the kids entertained, and luckily Arygll has everything your family needs to really enjoy the great outdoors. After only a short holiday break in Scotland you’ll leave feeling refreshed and recharged, with hundreds of happy memories to take home with you!

So, are you ready for your next active holiday in Scotland? Head on out into the wilderness and see exactly what the Scottish countryside has to offer!

1. Go for a Walk

From the mountainous landscapes to its tranquil lochs, the county of Argyll truly is one of the most picturesque places to holiday in Scotland. No matter how long you spend exploring the countryside, you’ll never cease to be amazed by the breathtaking views pretty enough to be on a postcard. There’s no better way to explore than by foot, so grab your walking boots, pack a picnic, and see which wonders you stumble upon! From peaceful strolls to adventurous hikes, there really are walking routes for every age and ability, making this the perfect activity for the entire family to enjoy.

One particularly family-friendly area is the Cowal peninsula, home to a countless number of walking routes through the incredible countryside. Go hiking in the Trossachs mountain range or simply wander along the shores of Loch Lomond, and if you’re lucky you may even spot one of Scotland’s famous red squirrels! Alternatively, for walks as short as 30 minutes, why don’t you check out one of the routes surrounding Hunters Quay Holiday Park? When it comes to Argyll, the world is your oyster. We guarantee that after a few hours of exercise and fresh air, your entire family will feel more relaxed than ever - even the kids!

2. Visit a Loch

Scotland is incredibly unique with a number of impressive lochs, and a trip to Argyll wouldn’t be complete without visiting at least one. With Loch Awe, Loch Lomond, and Loch Goil all within reach, there really is no excuse to stay away! If simply enjoying the scenery wasn’t enough, there are plenty of ways to keep active along their pebbled shores. For instance, why don’t you hire a pedal boat and explore the lochs this way? If you’re looking to chill out, there couldn’t possibly be anything more relaxing than a gentle cruise along the water. This activity is perfect for people of all ages, but children in particular will absolutely love the opportunity to show off their pedaling skills!

Don’t worry if you’re travelling with children too young to pedal, as you can always hire a motorboat to one of the many islands situated on Scotland’s most beautiful lochs. Another option is to catch the waterbus, so you really can just sit back and relax. For a true taste of what Argyll has to offer, why don’t you explore the famous Inchoailloch, Loch Lomond’s largest island? It even has its own picnic area with 3 walking routes to enjoy, so there are plenty of activities to keep you and your family occupied all day. In addition, each of the lochs’ islands are home to an abundance of wildlife, including birds, deer, and sometimes even otters!

3. Head to the Beach

If there’s one thing that springs to mind when we think of holidays in Scotland, it’s packing a towel and heading to the beach! With 3723 km of coastline, Argyll really does have it all - including some truly picturesque beaches. Not only is grabbing lunch by the sea a wonderful activity for the entire family, but Scotland is also particularly famous for the incredible wildlife living amongst its shores. Keep your eyes peeled for the local nature, including dolphins, otters and even basking sharks bathing in the water. For those of you who like to travel, there are some truly stunning beaches on the Isle of Bute which can be reached by car. For long stretches of golden sand, complete with a cafe and a children’s area, how about visiting Ettrick Bay? Or, if you’d like to visit somewhere with a memorable past, check out Scalpsie Bay, used throughout WWII for military purposes. Scalpsie Bay even has its own ‘Seal View’, a viewpoint from which hundreds of seals can be spotted sunbathing on the rocks!

Some of the most popular beaches may be found on the islands surrounding Argyll, but if you don’t fancy travelling too far the towns of Oban and Dunoon are just a few miles away from some of our holiday parks. Both towns are known for their panoramic views and rich histories, so you’re bound to have a fantastic day of exploring. If you’re thinking of spending the day at one of Scotland’s finest beaches, there are plenty of activities to enjoy. How about kayaking in the ocean, playing a game of volleyball, or setting up a temporary rounders pitch? There’s nothing quite like a sea breeze to make you feel healthy and refreshed!

4. On Your Bike

Cycling can sometimes seem like a chore when you’re commuting through the city, but there’s nothing more relaxing than meandering through the Scottish countryside on your bike. Scotland boasts some of the most beautiful landscapes in the world, and what better way to explore them than on wheels? Not only will you stay fit and healthy, but you’ll be having so much fun you won’t even realise that you’re exercising! With a fantastic mix of country roads and woodland trails, you’re bound to find a cycle route suitable for beginners and bike enthusiasts alike. If you’re really up for a challenge, why don’t you pack a picnic, catch the ferry, and spend the day exploring one of the 25 unique islands situated close to Argyll’s coast? You might even spot one of those gorgeous, fluffy Highland cows! Or, if you fancy something a little more leisurely, simply choose one of the many paths local to your holiday park. Soak up the nearby culture by exploring one of Argyll’s many historic castles, or simply find a pretty park to relax in the sun!

One of the best things about cycling is that (as long as you’re looking where you’re going, of course!) you can switch off from everyday stresses and simply enjoy the ride. To make it even easier, you don’t even have to bring your own bikes from home. We offer bikes to hire from each of our holiday parks for everyone over the age of 8, so that’s one less thing to worry about!

5. Make a Splash with Water Sports

Are you an active family who loves to be challenged? If yes, you’ve come to the right place! Nestled amongst the wonderful Scottish region of Argyll are countless lochs and lakes, so what could be better than trying out some of the fantastic water sports activities on offer? Not only are there plenty of bays and shores to explore, but the still, open water means that good old-fashioned swimming is also an option! If you’d like to try something completely new, why don’t you hire a couple of kayaks or paddleboards for the family? If you live in a city you might not have given watersports a try before, so holidaying in Scotland is the perfect opportunity to give it a go. You’ll have a great time navigating the lochs, and you’ll leave Argyll having tried something completely new. Who knows, you might even find your new family hobby! Be careful though - stand up paddleboarding can bring out a competitive streak in some families! After just a few hours on the water you’ll most certainly have earned yourself an ice cream, and we guarantee the entire family will sleep like a log.

Argyll truly is a wonderful region, and it’s the perfect holiday paradise for the times you’d like to escape the chaos of everyday life and de-stress at one of our 6 stunning parks. Why go further? Plan your break at one of our award winning parks in the heart of Scotland.
